CoQ10 ineffective for mitochondrial sleep apnea
We examined a rare case of mitochondrial encephalomyopathy featuring multiple complications including sleep apnea, cerebellar ataxia, and peripheral neuropathy—a combination never before documented in medical literature. The patient received six months of coenzyme Q10 therapy to address the underlying mitochondrial dysfunction.

Unfortunately, the treatment proved ineffective. Neither the cerebellar ataxia nor the abnormal pyruvate metabolism improved with CoQ10 supplementation. While sleep apnea was identified as a significant prognostic factor in this mitochondrial disorder, the supplement failed to alleviate this serious breathing complication or other associated symptoms.

We explored the impact of various treatments, including coenzyme Q10, on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in a patient with adult-onset Leigh disease. This condition often presents with severe neurological symptoms, complicating the patients’ overall health and quality of life.

An overnight sleep study revealed the presence of OSA, which had developed shortly before the neurological symptoms became apparent. Treatment included high doses of thiamine, coenzyme Q, L-carnitine, and vitamins C and E, along with effective management of OSA through continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).

Following this combined approach, we observed a marked clinical improvement not only in the patient's sleep quality but also in their neurological outcomes. While coenzyme Q10 was part of this combination therapy, its specific contribution to alleviating sleep apnea symptoms cannot be isolated from the other treatments. Overall, the findings suggest that recognizing and treating sleep apnea promptly can enhance patients’ well-being and potentially improve neurological conditions associated with Leigh disease.

Excellent preparation. It genuinely helps and is worth the money. Being over 50, I regret not knowing about coenzyme Q10 earlier, as I learned it decreases with age. I first purchased it after discovering that it can slow the ageing process. After taking it for about a year—initially bought in Russia but now on iHerb, as it's almost half the price—I've experienced noticeable improvements: 1) my headaches have almost stopped, 2) my sleep has improved significantly, 3) my immunity feels stronger, likely due to the vitamin E in the capsules, 4) I have more energy, and 5) my heart concerns have diminished as coenzyme stimulates my heart's energy processes. I noticed these benefits over the last 5-6 months. Consistent daily intake is vital for the best effects.
